Not To Miss - A Must Have
Great Book. We have bought many books about the Caribbean over the years, but this is one of the best if not the best. Easy to read, full of up to date info and breaks it down into catagories easy to find. Does not just refer to the large hotels or famous places to eat, but also those not so famous.
THE TIPS that are easy to see, are throughout the book that give short, to the point, info.
This is a valuable book.

Excellent
An excellent new guide... replete with detailed information on every aspect of vacationing on the islands. Illustrated with maps and drawings. Focus on France

We will have this book with us on our next trip
Finally! We have looked for years for a book which gave St. Barth proper coverage. We have heretofore found only books with from a few to a dozen pages. St. Martin & St. Barts Alive gives this tiny island well over a hundred pages, and it covers beaches, restaurants, hotels, villas, shopping, and considerably more. Our edition is copyright 1999, but the authors mention the damage done by Hurricane Luis several times -- do not let that dissuade you; the island had fully recovered when we visited there two seasons after Luis.

The layout uses lots of free clip art, one font used for headings is rather hard to read, and there are no photographs, but the book is well- written in plain English, without gushing -- we enjoyed it. The authors have covered the island very well, and there were lots of tips which were new to us. We will have this book with us on our next trip.

This book is recommended for all visitors to St. Barts, whether first- timers or old hands on the island.

Zoomer Guide to NYC's Most Famous T.V. and Movie Locations

I Love this Book
I came across this book one day and it is so fun. I am a huge film buff and have lived in NYC for years but didn't know anything about these locations except for the obvious ones like the Empire State Building in Sleepless in Seattle. Little did I know that I live down the street from where the Friends characters live...and Friends is my favorite show! Now when people coem to visit I always point out locations that I got from the guide.

I also like that the guide is lightweight and easy to carry around, and the map is not a huge embarrassing pullout so I don't look like a tourist when I whip it out.

I think anyone who loves movies and entertainment (and NYC) should get this guide.

Sex and the City
I am obsessed with Sex and the City and this guide has tons of the clubs and restaruants that you see on the show. My girlfriends and I like dressing up and checking these places out on the weekend.

What would I do without it...
This guide has been soooo useful to me. I purchased it from their company website (zoomerguides.com) a few months ago and ever since then everytime I pass City Hall all I can think about is Al Pacino as the mayor. I have told all my friends about ZOOMER and am now using it as a birthday gift, everytime a birthday comes around. In three words, all I have to say is --Go Get It!

Great unpretentious advice!
Terrific find---found wonderful restaurants I've never heard of and now have become favorites.

This makes a great no-brainer gift.

Excellent, comprehensive guide- First Rate!!
This is the most intelligent, comprehensive and useful guidebook to Philadelphia dining that I have ever seen. It is honest and on the money, and it has certainly saved me from dining disasters, and introduced me to some of the best dining in the city. Most importantly, it is laid out in a fashion that makes it super-easy to use.

Zagats for poor people!
I highly recommend this book for Philadelphians who love to eat out but don't have the budget to match their good taste. Similar to Zagats, but less with less pretension, it is full of great synopses of restaurants throughout the city arranged by cuisine and neighborhood. My only minor complaint is the lack of entries for restaurants in the suburbs. But who cares about restaurants in the suburbs when there are so many great ones in town?

Don't waste your money on Zagats- this book is far better!
This book is the best resource I've found for dining in Philadelphia... It tells you where to go, what to expect, and what it will cost, all written honestly, without advertisements. I highly recommend it, particularly for those who are new to, or visiting, Philadelphia

24 Great Rail-Trails of New Jersey
Published in Paperback by New England Cartographics (January, 1999)
Authors: Craig P. Penna, Valerie Vaughan, and Craig P. Della Penna
Average review score:

Excellent companion
For anyone interested in either discovering new trails to ride your bike on in new jersey or someone with an interest in rail
roading in the garden state the book is highly recommended. I live in northern n.j. (west paterson) and have taken the book with me on rides through some of the longer northern n.j. trails and have found the directions to the trail the sites to see and the remaining RR structures along the trail described very accurately. (Although the author seems to have missed mentioning the RR mile markers remaining on the essex branch by my house! ) Anyway i am 33 y.o. and i find that these long trails are sometimes a nice break from the more typical mtn. biking type of riding i also like to do in some of new jersey's other state parks. Dont get me wrong though ,these trails can certainly provide a great workout too. I recommend the southern section of the columbia trail through ken lockwood gorge as the nicest area in northern n.j.

Fantastic! Trail detail with the history of the railroads!
This book is quite unique & even better than the author's previous book on the rail-trails of New England. Three things distinguish this book from others:

(1) Insight into the history of the railroads.

(2) Useful & reliable descriptions of each trail.

(3) Needs of both cyclists & hikers are addressed.

A must-have for any rail-trail rider or hiker who wondered about the railroads that once ruled the trail.

50 Hikes in New Jersey: Walks, Hikes, and Backpacking Trips from the Kittatinnies to Cape May (Fifty Hikes Series)
Published in Paperback by Backcountry Pubns (January, 2003)
Authors: Bruce C. Scofield, Stella J. Green, and H. Neil Zimmerman

Top-notch guide
I love the way this book is organized. Rather than describe a series of hiking opportunities in New Jersey, the authors carefully culled through hundreds of trails and picked out the most exciting hikes in the state. They even patched together multiple trails in within most parks so you would get the best bang out of the time invested. The descriptions are accurate and fun to read. I tried three of them so far and look forward to doing the other 47.

Great book for day hikes in and about NJ.
In the first weeks of owning the book, I have done 3 of the hikes so far, Governor's Mtn, Manor circular, and Carris Hill, although I was already familiar with the parking lots, trailheads through many years mtn biking and hiking in the area, I found the descriptions to be top notch and accurate. Using those descriptions and a simple NYNJTC topo map (with GPS coordinates!) navigation is a snap. GPS is practically unnecessary since most of the trails are well marked. Even though I have only done three of the trips in there, I am very familiar with most of the places mentioned there, the Palisades, Wawayanda, Jockey Hollow, etc. as I've hiked or biked there before I got this book. The book is an excellent day trip for the beginner to intermediate day tripper, fits nicely even in small camelback type devices. My only wish is they included the trail blaze color in the maps they provide, makes for faster quick reference when hiking.

An Adirondack Passage: The Cruise of the Canoe Sairy Gamp
Published in Paperback by Adirondack Mountain Club (December, 1998)
Author: Christine Jerome
Average review score:

unique, facinating canoe trip
I loved this book on several levels. For one, it was short and simple and every word was right. For another, I have read many paddle trip narratives such as Running the Amazon by Joe Kane and Water and Sky by Alan Kesselheim. They also talk about the adventure and the surrounding history. But this is in a class by itself, a gentle canoe trip, if you will, taking on the amenities and lack of them in the nation's biggest park east of the Mississippi. I have only been to the Adirondacks a few times and been impressed by their beauty. But when I go back, and I hope I do, I will know so much more.

An enticing piece of American history.
Christine Jerome not only covers the trips of G. W. Sears through the Adirandack but she covers the rich history of the region in detail. An excellent book for more than the canoe enthusiast.

The Adirondacks
Published in Paperback by Rizzoli (June, 1994)
Authors: Nathan Farb and Paul Jamieson
Average review score:

A Spiritual Visit To The Adirondacks!
With an introduction by legend Paul Jamieson, we are immediately transported into the Adirondacks as seen through the eye of an established photographer. Nathan Farb has been at his profession for years and this collection of streams, waterfalls, rivers, mountain peaks, deep woods, lakes and ponds is one of his absolute best. His lens captures the spirit; the essence of the view. Every photo evokes a sense of spirituality and timelessness. You become witness to a breathtaking array of one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Beautiful region - Beautiful photography
The Adirondacks are truly one of America's great wilderness areas. Using a 8-by-10 inch Deardorff camera, Nathan Farb beautifully photographs many Adirondack scenes here. Author Paul Jamieson provides an introductory essay on the area's geography, unique qualities, and ecological importance. If one has visited the Adirondacks, one will find this book a vivid reminder of this special region. If one hasn't been to the Adirondacks, this book should compel them as much as anything to make a trip there.

Adirondacks, Views of An American Wilderness
Published in Hardcover by Rizzoli (June, 1999)
Authors: Carl E. Heilman II and introduction Bill McKibben
Average review score:

The Fullest Range With Majectic Moods!
Photographer Carl E. Hellman has crafted a collection of Adirondack photographs that continue to fascinate page after page. All aspects of this remarkable region are well represented from the wildest of waterways and majectic peaks to the outlying areas of cozy farms and inland towns. By far the most amazing photographs are those in wide-screen format - much wider than anything this reviewer has seen elsewhere. Ranging from awe-filled aerial views from high peaks in all seasons to the intimate settings of bogs and marshes, Hellman captures the mood of these mountains. Mist shrouded ponds, newly falling snow, green glimpses through mature virgin forests and close-ups from lady-slippers to primeval bogs; the viewer is mesmerized. Overwhelming beauty and the calm feeling of a lonely untouched wilderness is caught everywhere. This is a collector's item to cherish all year long.

Spectacular Photography
I was privilaged to be present at the slide show presented by Carl Heilman at the annual Adirondack Club dinner last autumn. Many exquisite pictures from this book were shown. Mr. Heilman has captured the true spirit of dawn in the mountains, children leaping with joy , winter landscapes, and especially the wild creatures that most of us may never be patient enough to discover in their natural homes. Many shots exhibit a seemingly impossible depth of field sharply focusing on both a spider web in the foreground and Mount Marcy in the background. The book is full of beautiful images not to be missed!

At the Plaza: An Illustrated History of the World's Most Famous Hotel
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (October, 2000)
Authors: Curtis Gathje and Curt Gathje
Average review score:

THE PLAZA=DELUXE
When someone mentions The Plaza what do you first think of? Luxury? Eloise? Donald and Ivana? Dietrich or Garbo or F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald in residence? The Pulitzer Fountain? The final scene from "The Way We Were?"

All of them and many, many more are here in this deluxe book about this deluxe hotel. Chock full of blueprints, wonderful photographs and reproductions of menus and paintings and postcards, this book is not just a history of a hotel...it is, truly, a history of New York City which is host to the hotel. You will learn how specific rooms (The Palm Court, The Edwardian Room, The Oak Room, etc.) were "born", how, when and why celebrities like Frank Lloyd Wright lived at the hotel, how various suites came to be decorated by and named after people like Cecil Beaton, what the scandal was caused by Mrs. Patrick Campbell, how the Duke and Duchess of Windsor celebrated their anniversary here and how Patricia Kennedy and Peter Lawford celebrated their marriage here. There are revealing photographs of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis with her husband and son avoiding the paparazzi, John and Yoko enjoying an obviously romantic lunch, Truman Capote's Black and White party and so many of the entertainers who performed at the famous Persian Room: Shirley Bassey, Ethel Merman, The Mills Brothers, Kay Thompson (mother to Eloise), Eartha Kitt, Bob Hope, Liberace, Diahann Carroll, etc. There is even an entire chapter on the many movies that were filmed at the hotel, beginning with Hitchcock's masterpiece, "North By Northwest."

All of Gathje's research is well documented and written in a fascinating style: charming, inviting, intimate, warm, classy and yet filled with good humor. RECOMMENDED.
